PET-CT is the most powerful cancer detection tool available in routine clinical medicine. A single scan can survey your entire body — brain included — for metabolically active cancer cells, at a resolution that no other imaging technology currently matches. It is included in our Crystal PET program. Here is a plain-English explanation of what it actually does, what it can and cannot detect, and whether it is the right choice for you.
What PET-CT actually is
PET-CT combines two separate scanning technologies into one machine. PET stands for Positron Emission Tomography. CT stands for Computed Tomography. They run simultaneously, and the combined image gives doctors both the structural detail of a CT scan and the metabolic activity data of a PET scan overlaid on the same image.
Here is the key insight that makes PET-CT so powerful for cancer detection: cancer cells consume glucose at a significantly higher rate than normal cells. Before the scan, you are injected with a small amount of radioactive glucose (called FDG — fluorodeoxyglucose). The PET component of the scanner detects where in your body this glucose is being consumed most intensely. Cancerous tissue lights up.
What CT does
- Shows the structure and size of tissues and organs
- Detects masses, nodules, and anatomical abnormalities
- Excellent for solid tumors that have grown large enough to see structurally
- Cannot distinguish between active cancer and scar tissue
- Cannot detect cancer that has not yet formed a visible mass
What PET adds
- Shows metabolic activity — which cells are consuming glucose rapidly
- Detects cancer at the cellular level, before structural changes appear
- Can identify whether a suspicious mass is actively malignant or benign scar tissue
- Scans the entire body simultaneously — no blind spots
- Detects cancer that has spread (metastasized) to lymph nodes or distant organs
Together, PET and CT produce an image that shows both where an abnormality is located (CT) and whether it is metabolically active and therefore potentially malignant (PET). This combination is why PET-CT is considered the gold standard for full-body cancer staging and detection.
What PET-CT can detect
PET-CT is particularly effective at detecting and staging the following cancers:
- Lung cancer — even small early-stage nodules that are metabolically active
- Colon and colorectal cancer
- Lymphoma — both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's
- Esophageal and stomach cancer
- Head and neck cancers
- Thyroid cancer — certain types
- Breast cancer — staging and metastasis detection
- Melanoma and skin cancers that have spread
- Brain tumors — differentiating recurrent tumor from radiation damage
PET-CT has limitations. It is less reliable for detecting prostate cancer (which is slow-growing and low-glucose-consuming), some kidney cancers, hepatocellular carcinoma, and early-stage ovarian cancer. For these, specific ultrasounds, MRI, and targeted tumor markers are more effective — which is why the Crystal PET program includes both PET-CT and a full suite of targeted tests alongside it.
What to expect on the day
The PET-CT process step by step
Fasting From midnight before
No food or sugary drinks for at least 6 hours before the scan. This ensures your baseline blood glucose is low, so the injected radioactive glucose uptake contrast is clear.
FDG injection ~10 minutes
A small amount of radioactive glucose is injected intravenously. This is a very low dose — comparable to a standard X-ray in terms of radiation exposure.
Uptake period — rest quietly 45–60 minutes
You rest quietly in a warm room while the FDG distributes through your body. No phone, no reading — minimal movement keeps muscle glucose uptake low so the images are cleaner.
The scan itself 20–30 minutes
You lie still on a moving table that passes through the PET-CT scanner. The machine is open at both ends — not claustrophobic like an MRI. No loud noise. Most people find it very easy.

PET-CT vs standard CT: what is the practical difference?
A standard CT scan takes a structural photograph of your body. It is excellent for finding things that have already grown large enough to see — a mass, an enlarged lymph node, a structural change in an organ. But cancer does not start as a visible mass. It starts as a cluster of abnormally metabolizing cells.
PET-CT can detect cancer at a stage when the structural change is still too small to see on CT alone. This is the core of its value for screening: it can find things earlier, when treatment options are most effective and outcomes are best.
Who should consider the Crystal PET program?
Is PET-CT right for you?
Age 50 and above, no specific symptoms
Proactive cancer surveillance becomes significantly more valuable after 50. PET-CT gives a full-body baseline that standard programs cannot match.
Family history of cancer
If one or more first-degree relatives had cancer, your risk profile is elevated. PET-CT as part of a regular screening schedule is strongly worth considering.
Current or former smoker
Lung cancer risk is significantly elevated. Low-dose lung CT catches structural nodules, but PET-CT adds metabolic assessment for any suspicious findings.
Age 35–50, healthy, wanting maximum information
PET-CT is not specifically age-restricted. For someone who wants the most comprehensive single-day assessment available, the Crystal PET program delivers it.
Pregnant or breastfeeding
PET-CT involves a small amount of ionizing radiation and radioactive tracer. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Diabetic patients
PET-CT requires controlled blood glucose for accurate results. Diabetic patients need specific preparation guidance. It is possible, but requires coordination with our team in advance.
PET-CT is the centrepiece, but it is surrounded by a comprehensive suite of tests that cover what PET-CT does not: targeted tumor markers for prostate and ovarian cancers, carotid and cardiac ultrasounds, brain MRI and MRA, full hormone panel, genetic cancer risk testing (10 types), 24-hour Holter ECG, and a 108-allergen panel. The program is designed so that the tests complement each other with no blind spots.
Patients sometimes ask about radiation exposure from PET-CT. The total effective radiation dose is approximately 14–25 mSv — roughly comparable to 5–7 years of natural background radiation, or a long-haul transatlantic flight multiplied by a few hundred. For a one-off screening in an adult, the radiation exposure is considered clinically acceptable.
